Fuels, Polymers and Pollution by Mind Map: Fuels, Polymers and Pollution

1. Greenhouse Gases

1.1. Usually Carbon Dioxide,Nitrous Oxide and Ozone

1.2. Absorb infrared radiation and emit it out in all directions

1.3. Cause the 'Greenhouse effect' which traps heat in Earth's Atmosphere, in the long term heating it up

2. Acid Rain

2.1. Caused by Nitrous Oxide and Sulphur Dioxide

2.2. Usually released by the burning of fossil fuels

2.3. Changes pH of water in clouds

2.4. Then rains acidic water which corrodes limestone structures like brick and sculptures/statues

2.5. It also washes nutrients out of the soil stopping plants from growing and hindering further growth, sometimes killing them

3. Fuels

3.1. Crude Oil made from Hydrocarbons

3.2. Hydrocarbons made from Hydrogen and Carbon

3.3. Each Carbon Atom is joined to 2 Carbons atoms and 2 Hydrogen atoms

3.4. Have the base formula C(n)H(2n+2)

3.5. Crude Oil is fractioned using a similar method to distilling

3.6. The Oil is heated up and longer chains of Hydrocarbons stay near the bottom of the heating column while smaller chains rise to the top

4. Polymers

4.1. Alkene monomers can join together to form polymers

4.2. For Example ethene forms polyethene

4.3. Monomer to Polymer: - draw the monomer but with a single bond - draw a long bond either side - draw brackets through the long bonds - write n after the bracket

4.4. Polymers non-biodegradeable

4.5. Difficult to dispose of but last a long time
