2. Operational roles
2.1. **Admin & Management Staff** Keep the neonatal unit running smoothly and safely.
2.2. **Transport team** A Neonatal Transport Service (NTS) is a specialised team that transfers premature or sick newborns between hospitals to provide the necessary care that may not be available at the local facility. These services are staffed by expert clinicians and nurses who provide continuous neonatal care throughout the journey.
2.3. **Neonatal Safety Champion** Act as a link between staff, service users, and the trust board, sharing challenges and successes and championing learning.
3. Medical and nursing team
3.1. **Neonatologists / Paediatricians** Senior doctors leading care for premature or critically ill babies.
3.2. **Neonatal Nurses** Provide daily hands-on care, monitoring, and family support.
3.3. **Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (ANNPs)** Highly skilled nurses managing complex care and procedures.
3.4. **Palliative / Bereavement Nurses** Provide holistic support during life-limiting or end-of-life care.
3.5. **Pharmacists** Ensure safe and effective use of medicines.
3.6. **Discharge Coordinators** Plan babies’ safe return home or to local care.
3.7. **Neonatal Infant Feeding Lead ** Provides expert support and advice to families and staff in relation to feeding. Often leads on the implementation of BFI neonatal standards.
3.8. **Neonatal Outreach** These teams provide specialist care to babies and support families once home following discharge from neonatal in-patient services.
4. Emotional & psychological support
4.1. **Psychological Professionals** Support mental wellbeing of families and neonatal staff.
4.2. **Family Support Workers** Offer practical advice and emotional support to families.
5. Allied Health Professionals
5.1. **Dieticians** Plan and monitor babies’ nutritional needs and growth.
5.2. **Physiotherapists** Support movement, breathing, and physical development.
5.3. **Occupational Therapists (OTs)** Focus on sensory needs and developmental milestones.
5.4. **Speech & Language Therapists (SLTs)** Help with feeding, swallowing, and early communication.
