Steps Taken to Obtain Desired Substances

1. What we need to obtain: Water and sand
2. Mixture: Water, sand, oil and salt
3. 1) Use aluminium foil to make a container and a cover.
3.1. The container is used to hold the water while the cover is used to cover the boiling water.
4. 2) Filter sand out of oil and salt solution using a cloth bag.
4.1. To separate sand from the salt solution and oil
4.1.1. Filtration: Used to separate insoluble solid particles from liquid
5. 3) Pour the oil and water mixture into the aluminium container and heat it using a bunsen burner.
5.1. To separate the water from oil and salt
5.1.1. Evaporation: Water will evaporate, thus separating the oil from the water.
6. 5) Place a damp cloth on top of the cover.
6.1. To provide a cool surface for the water vapour to condense on.
7. 4) Connect a wire to the cover and hold it above the heating container of oil and water.
7.1. To create a handle
8. 6) Let the mixture boil and water vapour will condense on the cover.
8.1. To obtain pure water
8.1.1. Oil and salt will be left on the bowl
