Behavior of Waves
by Anna Crabb
1. Reflection
1.1. -Occurs when a wave bounces off a surface that it cannot pass through.
1.2. -Occurs when waves bounce off a surface it can't go through.
1.3. -Waves in a pool -Ball thrown at a wall
2. Refraction
2.1. -The bending of a wave as it enters a new medium at an angle.
2.2. -The bending of a wave as it goes through a new medium at an angle.
2.3. -Ocean Currents -Lawnmower from grass to gravel
3. Diffraction
3.1. -The bending of a wave as it moves around an obstacle or passes through a narrow opening.
3.2. -The bending of a wave when it goes around an obstacle.
3.3. -When water goes by rocks -Sound from room to room
4. Interference
4.1. -Occurs when two or more waves overlap and combine
4.2. -Occurs when two or more waves combine
4.3. -Rivers that connect -Sounds combining
5. Constructive Interference
5.1. -When two or more waves combine to produce a wave with larger displacement
5.2. -When two or more waves combine to produce a wave with more displacement,
5.3. -Two friends send waves with the same frequency on a jump rope -Both people talk with the same pitch and frequency
6. Destructive Interference
6.1. -Occurs when two or more waves overlap and combine
6.2. -When two or more waves combine.
6.3. -Rivers that connect -Sounds combining
7. Standing Waves
7.1. -A wave that appears to stay in one place, doesn't move through a medium.
7.2. -A wave that stays in place
7.3. -Guitar strings -Elastic strings
