Impressions of Father

1. Father was of high ranking and was respected by many. Pg45:"Father held his hand in the air, which immediately caused the other man to turn silent." -sonia

2. Father was very understanding..Pg54;"I have been very considerate of your feelings here,Bruno,because i know that this move is difficult for you.

3. Father looks down on Maria.Pg 18:"even though Father said she was just a maid and overpaid at that.'The phrase 'just a maid'and the choice of words used shows that Father does not really give a second thought of Maria and even thinks that he paid her too much for the little amount of chores she had completed.

4. Father looked down on Maria. Pg1:"his mother always told him that he was to speak to Maria respectfully and not imitate the way Father spoke to her." This indicates that Father spoke to Maria rudely and is not careful about his word choice, maybe even raising his voice at her. Perhaps this is because Father is condescending. Father thinks of Maria of "just a maid" and does not think of her as his equal as she is of lower standard, suggesting that Father looked down on Maria. -sonia

5. Father was a very fierce man.Pg 19:"wondering whether Father might come through it and take him downstairs for a serious talking-to."This sentence shows that Father would reprimand and punish people severely.

6. Father has good self control.He hardly raises his voice at Bruno.

7. Father is intimidating. " Bruno swallowed nervously, and,after a few moments of silence,glanced back at father, who was staring at him stone faced." This shows that Bruno is intimidated by Father.

8. Father has an important job and was of high ranking. Pg4:"he was a man to watch and the Fury had big things in mind for him." Pg5:"It's a very important job." pg7:"Your father's job is -" - sonia

9. Father is respected in the household. Pg10:"he heard her speaking loudly to him until Father spoke louder than Mother could and that put a stop to their conversation." Usually when people are in an argument, they try to speak louder than the other until someone wins the argument. However, when Father spoke louder than Mother, she did not try to shout louder and continue the argument. She stayed quiet and this shows that she respected Father. -sonia

9.1. Father was strict. Pg 46:"...he(Bruno) had been naughty and needed to have a serious talking-to." Father made this rule very clear to Bruno: if he was naughty, there would be consequences. Bruno recalls this memory suggests that the consequences were so dire that it has been etched in his mind. Perhaps Father explicitly scolded Bruno. This clearly illustrates that Father is strict and strongly enforces the rules he has implemented in the household. -sonia

10. Father is not responsible. He went to Out-with first and left Mother to clear up the mess at home.( Page 41)
