What do Testers do?

What are some of the things people think you do?

What people think you do

Testing is

a job

a career

interesting

boring (to some)

depending how you do it

exciting

depending how you do it

a challenge

something we all do from birth

Realise

We ask questions

Stakeholders, Need different things

Customers

Requirements, Is this what is needed? Is this still needed?

Schedule, What we can do

Ourselves, Do I have enough information? How can I get more?

Testers

Think, Lateral, Logical, Dark, Creativity, Different perspectives, User, Six Thinking Hats, Troublemaker, Stake holder, Developer, Hacker, Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action.

Knowledge, Tacit knowledge, difficult to transfer to another person, has been described as “know-how”, (Henry) Bessemer process (1850 to 1855), cheap mass production of steel from iron, cooling air process which took out the impurties, trick was in knowing when to stop the air flow, impurities in the iron and concluded that the solution lay in knowing when to turn off the flow of air in his process so that the impurities were burned off but just the right amount of carbon remained, Example, Cooking, Cookie monster, Pasta. Easy?, Implicit Knowledge, Implicit and tacit knowledge are thought to be similiar but it's thought that implicit can be turned to explicit and tacit cannot, Explicit knowledge, knowledge that has been articulated, codified, and stored in certain media

A tester is somebody who knows that things can be different. - Jerry Weinberg

To finish - What do Testers do?

We are not a safety net

We are not a gateway

We are not a judge

We are not the voice of reason

Use a number of different approaches, techniques, soft skills, hard skills, knowledge, information, context, experience, investigative curiosity, constant learning and much much more to question.

We use different skills and personality traits at different times to achieve what we need to do.

Why?, We do this in order to provide information to help gain more information to help those who need to make decisions.

What I think

What about you?

Things to discuss?

Information providers

explorers

How

Investigate, question everything and everybody, facilitate

Share information, Building models of the system, it's valuable documentation, be it excel spreadsheets, domain diagrams, state transition diagrams, live specifications, Radiate information to fellow colleagues, especially to other testers, internet resources; pointing them to blogs/articles/meetups, brown bags, general overview of the system

Appropiate preparation, testing strategy, planning, tooling, heuristics, gathering experience on building heuristics

discussions, get people started on talking about insecure/feeble areas of their understanding of the system, brainstorming, ask strategic questions that verify the understanding of the team

Who

Everybody

Why

Provide information, decisions made

When

All the time

Maybe we should do like a primary and secondary.

Like introducing new processes could be a secondary

Clarify domain language

A tester can be

creative

detailed

good with language

good communicator

knowledgable

a facilitator

How can we prove our value?

Don't do well
