Balanced Literacy Program
by Paul Nethery
1. Shared Reading: • Guided reading book set (or copies of a text) • Quiet space to work with students (reading table, carpet, circle etc…) • Build stamina up for carry a group for 15-20min in time (start small, maybe 3min)
2. Independent Reading: • Good fit books available for students • Quiet space for all to work independently • Post-it notes to note moments of thought / predictions / questions etc… • Build stamina (again goal 15-20min)
3. Guided Reading: • Levelled texts for the small groups (4-5) • Teacher will have a strategy they wish to work on chosen in advance (ie: inferring) • Remainder of class independently working on another task • A Guided Reading table is ideal for this so students can face one another with a teacher focus
4. Read Aloud: • A text that the teacher can read and model reading strategies from • Age/level appropriate text • Quiet setting, focus on the text and the thought process being modelled by the teacher • Build to 15-20min
