1. Europe

1.1. • WESTPHALIA, GERMANY

1.1.1. Candide is forced to leave the Castle Thunder-Ten-Tronckh, due to a kiss between himself and the baron's daughter Cunégonde. Shortly thereafter, Candide is enrolled in the Bulgarian army. The Bulgarians bring Candide to the brink of death when he is saved by the Bulgarian King.

1.2. • HOLLAND (NETHERLANDS)

1.2.1. Candide meets the Anabaptist Jacques and finds his old tutor, Philosopher Pangloss. He [Pangloss] tells Candide that the Bulgarians ravished his lovely Cunégonde, and then disemboweled her and her family.

1.3. • LISBON, PORTUGAL

1.3.1. Candide witnesses the Lisbon earthquake and is flogged by the Inquisition. He also hears the news of Pangloss’ hanging. He is taken in by an old woman who nurses him back to health. The old woman reunites him with his beloved Cunégonde. In her apartment he kills her two lovers when they arrive to reap their rights of her.

1.4. • CADIZ, SPAIN

1.4.1. Candide, Cunégonde, and the old woman flee Lisbon and travel to Cadiz, Spain. Candide joins the army and sails for the New World.

2. SOUTH AMERICA AND THE OCEAN VOYAGES

2.1. • ON THE ATLANTIC

2.1.1. Candide, Cunégonde, and the old woman are on sail to Buenos Aires. The old woman tells her story of misfortunes

2.2. • BUENOS AIRES

2.2.1. Candide, pursued by the police (because of the two men he killed in Lisbon), flees from Buenos Aires accompanied by Cacambo.

2.3. • PARAGUAY

2.3.1. Candide flees to the Jesuit encampment in Paraguay where he stabs the young baron (Cunégonde’s brother whom they thought died in Westphalia).

2.4. • THE LAND OF THE BIGLUGS

2.4.1. Candide kills two monkeys that were biting two naked woman, then is nearly eaten by the Biglugs.

2.5. • ELDORADO

2.5.1. Candide travels to the fabled land of Eldorado, after meeting the King, they decided to quit the Kingdom because Candide wished to find Cunégonde. The King allowed them to take provisions, sheep, presents, gold, diamonds, and jewels.

2.6. • SURINAM

2.6.1. Candide and Cacambo separate. Candide pays a skipper to beckon Cunégonde out of Spain. Candide finds a new companion, the scholar Martin.

2.7. • ON THE ATLANTIC

2.7.1. Candide and Martin discuss philosophy as they travel to France.

3. EUROPE AND TURKEY

3.1. • OFF THE COAST OF FRANCE

3.1.1. Candide and Martin continue their discussion and debate whether or not to visit France.

3.2. • PARIS

3.2.1. Candide and Martin travel to Paris via Bordeaux. Candide is struck will illness probably from fatigue. Because he has so much money he was well taken care of and cured of his aliments. Candide is also introduced to the pleasures and pitfalls of Parisian life. Candide desired to dine with Ms. Clairon, for he was taken by her demeanor, but he did not. Instead he visited a Marchioness (a lady of favours).

3.3. • PORTSMOUTH HARBOR, ENGLAND

3.3.1. Not the way to Venice, but was the way to escape the hell of Paris. Candide witnesses the execution of a British admiral.

3.4. • VENICE

3.4.1. Candide and Martin looked for Cacambo, but to no avail. Instead, Candide met with Paquette and Friar Giroflée, Lord Pococurante, the six kings. Finally, at last is reunited with Cacambo. Still there was no sign of Cunégonde and Candide believes her to be dead.

3.5. • AT SEA/CONSTANTINOPLE

3.5.1. Candide is reunited with Pangloss whom he thought had died in Lisbon. Likewise he met with the young baron (Cunégonde brother). Candide ransomed for their freedom in Constantinople, along with Cacambo.

3.6. • PROPONTIS

3.6.1. (the Sea of Marmara, in what is today Turkey) Candide finds Cunégonde and the old woman. He pays for their freedom. Candide does not find Cunégonde attractive anymore, but keeps his promise to marry her. They settle down on a farm with their friends Martin, Cacambo, Pangloss and the Baron to cultivate their "garden."
