1. Slave vs. Non Slave
1.1. The North was anti slave and the South was pro slave. Entrance of new territory caused conflict amongst the country.
2. Growth of Abolition Movement
2.1. Northerners became more vocal against slavery.
2.1.1. The publishing of Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin, the Dred Scott Case, John Brown's Raid, and the passage of the fugitive slave act that held individuals responsible for harboring fugitive slaves even if they were located in non-slave states aided in strengthening the abolition movement.
3. Election of Abe Lincoln
3.1. Southern states viewed Lincoln as being anti slavery and pushing the Northern agenda.
3.1.1. By the time Lincoln took office 7 states had seceded from the Union.
