6. Underline or highlight important words or phrases

6.1. (i) Use the highlighted words and phrases to make one or 2 sentences to summarize that paragraph.

6.3.1. A student comes up to the board and underlines important words

6.3.2. Another student reads it outloud, modeling reading.

7. Summary Skills Handout and Activity

7.1. Handout is distributed, contains steps for summarizing for future reference.

7.2. Students are paired off into groups of 2, each student is numbered: 1, 2. Student 1 reads the first paragraph silently to themselves, student 2 does the same for the second paragraph.

7.2.1. Students put down the reading, face down and tell their partner what they read.

7.2.1.1. This is to demonstrate to the students that they already have some summary skills even if they didn't realize it. The information they remember is probably one of the important points.

7.3. Next, students read the entire article silently to themselves and underline or highlight the important points.

7.3.1. (i) Use the highlighted words and phrases to make one or 2 sentences to summarize that paragraph.

7.3.2. (ii) Do this for each paragraph and combine Summary Sentences into a Summary Paragraph

7.3.2.1. The paragraph containing the Summary Sentences is polished into a final copy, students review the final copy to ensure the original message of the article is retained.
