1. Standard 1: Students will learn, speak, read and write in English, for information and understanding.

1.1. Students learning English as second language will use English to acquire, intepret, apply and transmit information for content area learning

1.2. Students will develop and use skills and strategies to collect data, facts and ideas; discover concepts and relationship and use knowledge acquired from oral, written, and electronically produced texts.

1.3. Strategies: * small group setting, such as co-operative learning groups, writing groups, research groups.* Asking questions, rephrasing, exploring alternative way of saying things. * KWL chart, graphic organizers, and context clues.

2. Standard 2: Students will listen, speak, read and write in English for literary response, enjoyment and expression.

2.1. Students learning English as second language will use English for self expression, artistic creation and participation in popular culture.

2.2. Students will develop and use skills and strategies to listen to, read and respond to oral, written and electronically produced texts.

2.3. Relate the texts to their own lives and develop understanding of the diverse social, historical and cultural dimensions the texts and performance represent.

2.4. Strategies: * Read different genres. * Skimming, scanning, previewing, reviewing, listening for main ideas and details. * Identifying the literary elements such as setting, character, plot, theme, repetition and point of view.

3. Standard 3: Students will listen, speak, read and write in english for critical analysis and evaluation

3.1. Students learning English as second language will use English to express their opinions and judgments on experiences, messages, ideas, information and issues from different perspective.

3.2. Students will develop and use skills and strategies to analyse and reflect on experiences, messages, ideas, information, and issues presented by others.

3.3. Strategies: * Small group setting, such as discussion group, writing group, learning group. * Visual presentation, clarity of ideas, logic and originality. * KWL chart, graphic organizers, note taking. * use of spoken language features such as grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and annotation. * Written language features such as grammar, vocabulary, correct spelling, punctuation and capitalization.

4. Standard 4: Students will listen, speak, read and write in English for social interaction and in classroom.

4.1. Students learning English as second language will use English to interact with others, socially and in classrooms.

4.2. Students will develop and use skills and strategies for effective communication to audience, for a purpose and setting.

4.3. Strategies: * By using the form of friendly notes, invitation, e-messages, diary writing etc. * Present something to peers, classes, teachers, and other adults. * Interacting with people by routines such as asking permissions, making requests, making promises, thanking, apologizing, chatting with friends, participating in group discussion, greeting principal or other adults and making purchases.

5. Standard 5: Students will demonstrate cross cultural knowledge and understanding.

5.1. Students will demonstrate cross cultural knowledge and understanding, by communicating with others of different social, cultural and linguistic background.

5.2. Students will develop and use the knowledge of local and US cultures and practices in their interaction with others.

5.3. Strategies: * By demonstrating familiarity with formality, slang, humor and idioms. * Demonstrate familiarity about holidays, symbols, traditions, customs, governance systems and schooling. * Demonstrate the knowledge of non verbal communications such as gestures, body language, volume, stress and annotation.
