1. 1st learning choice: Reading the staff: Lines

1.2.1. Use the staff lap board to practice OR

1.2.2. Use a paper staff to place notes on lines. Either way you do it, start your notes on Line 1 and end on Line 5.

1.3. Demonstrate mastery

1.3.1. Complete an online or paper copy of "place the notes on the lines". Use 5 corks or 5 notes on the lines of the staff. Place notes from line 1 to line 5. Do not repeat any lines. If you use the lap board, show your teacher your work. If you use the online site, take a screenshot and upload the picture to Schoology.

2.2. Watch an instructional video about spaces

2.4. Demonstrate Mastery

2.4.1. Complete an online or paper copy of "place the notes on the spaces." Use 4 corks or 4 notes on the spaces of the staff. Place notes from space 1 to space 4. Do not repeat any spaces. If you use the lap board, show your teachr your work. If you use the online site, take a screenshot and upload to the picture to Schoology.

3.1. Instruction

3.1.1. Watch a video about a composer who is writing music

3.2. Practice/Activity

3.2.1. Use a teacher created Smartboard activity to write music

3.3. Demonstrate Mastery

4. Write a two measure phrase that you really like and then share the melody with someone else.

4.1. Use the staff lap board that your teacher provides, paper, or website to create your melody. If using the website, take a screenshot and upload it.

4.1.1. If using the staff lap board, use quarter notes (corks), quarter rest (foam cut out), and eighth notes (tiles.) Use two lap boards to make a two measure phrase.

4.1.2. Use a variety of lines and spaces. It is ok to repeat notes but do not repeat more than two notes in a row.

5. After writing and sharing your music, answer the following questions:

5.1. Did you complete two measures with four beats in each measure? That would mean four corks (or quarter notes) equals four beats. You can substitute two tiles (two eighth notes) for one cork (quarter note) or you could use one rest for one cork (quarter note.)

5.2. Did you make the melody move up one line or space at least one time?

5.2.1. Did you make the melody move down one line or one space at least one time?

5.2.2. Did the melody stay on the same line or space at least one time?

5.2.2.1. Explain how you came up with your melody to one person you know.
