Passive with modals
Passive in unreal conditional sentences
Most of the times the general rules are almost the same both in English and in Portuguese. However, one must be careful not to use such constructions as if they were Portuguese ones, as they could, sometimes, sound too awkward. See below some of the main forms of the passive voice: Present simple Ann cleans this room every day (active) This room is cleaned every day (passive) note: if you decide to say who is the practioner of the action you can use "by", followed by the subject in the active voice. Past simple Ann cleaned this room yesterday (active) This room was cleaned yesterday (passive) Present continuous Ann is cleaning this room at the moment (active) This room is being cleaned at the moment (passive) Past continuous Ann was cleaning this room when I arrived (active) This room was being cleaned when I arrived (passive) Present perfect The room looks nice. Ann has cleaned it. (active) The room looks nice. It has been cleaned.(passive) Past perfect The room looked much better. Ann had cleaned it. (active) The room looked much better. It had been cleaned. (passive) Notes: Some verbs can have two objects. In this case, it is possible to make two different passive sentences: Ex. They didn't offer Ann the Job. (active) 1- Ann wasn't offered the job. (passive) 2- The job wasn't offered to Ann.(passive) However, it is more usual for the passive sentence to begin with the person. Other verbs like "offer" which can have two objects are: ask - tell - give - send - show- teach - pay
