1. Middle Colonies

1.1. New York

1.1.1. New York Colony. James founded New York. He sent war ships and the Dutch surrenedered immediately. James renamed the colony New York after himself, James: the Duke of York. At the end of the 1600's New York was still a villiage and it still is today. The colony was founded because of trade and profit. The Dutch and the Native Americans traded fur and also the Dutch traded with the British colonies. There was a small Dutch population and colonist from France, Sweden, and Portugal. What was important about this colony was it was a Dutch colony before until the British took it over and then other colonist migrated to New York.

1.2. New Jersey

1.2.1. New Jersey colony. An individual family founded New Jersey. It was establlished in 1665 when a part of southern New York was split off to form a new colony. The colony wsa created by a grant of land from a monarch to an individual or family. In 1702, New Jersey recieved a new charter as a royal colony (a colony controlled directly from the English King).
