1. The Oregon Trail

1.1. "Oregon Fever" swept through the Mississippi Valley in the early 1800's.

1.2. The Panic of 1837 caused people to form societies and plan a big move. This was also known as "The Great Migration".

1.3. Tons of people made the 2,000 mile journey and stuffed their prairie schooners with supplies.

1.3.1. They followed the Oregon Trail across the Great Plains, across the Platte River, South of the Rocky Mountains. Along the other side they took the trail North and West along the Snake and Columbia rivers.

2. California Gold Rush

2.1. More than 80,000 people all over the world came to California to search for quick riches and gold in 1849 alone. Those people were called forty-niners.

2.2. Many of the seekers came to California by sea. Others came overland either by traveling on the Oregon Trail or the Santa Fe Trail. While pushing through the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

2.3. Around 80 percent were Americans, the other 20 percent came from Mexico, South America, Europe, and Australia. About 300 men came from China and they were known as the first large group of Asian immigrants. Eventually some returned to China and the others that remained established California's Chinese American community.

4.1.1. William Becknell was born in 1787, Amherst County, Va. He died on April 30, 1865, Red River County, Tx. He was a soldier, politician, and established the Santa Fe Trail.

5. Manifest Destiny

5.1. O'Sullivan declared that it was Americas "Manifest Destiny" to overspread. He thought that it was Americas special purpose to extend it's boundaries to the Pacific.

5.2. James K Polk received the Democratic Party's nomination for president, partly because he American claims for sole ownership of Oregon.

5.3. The Democrats slogan was "Fifty-four Forty or Fight."It referred to the line of latitude that Democrats believed should be the nation's northern border in Oregon.
