5. Purpose

5.1. The purpose of my Slowmation is to expand the students’ range, understanding and use of prepositions in composing and responding to both written and multi-media texts, thereby improving composition and interpretation skills.

6. Use

6.1. I intend to use my Slowmation in the classroom to (literally) animate the relatively dry subject of prepositions, enhancing the teaching of subject English. While some students will be familiar with all the prepositions, many (particularly those with a non-English speaking backgrounds) will have a limited ability to interpret and use the full set. Such a Slowmation could be used as a warm-up or mid-class break from regular activity to fulfil the requirements to include explicit teaching of grammar in the English Syllabus.

7. Audience

7.1. The intended audience of my Slowmation is Year 7 (Stage 4) English. Capturing and holding the attention of students raised on a multi-media diet of 3 second edit video clips and Xbox games is increasingly challenging. The mnemonic of the Preposition Song is intended to present the content at a pace and in a multi-media style that is consistent with their recreational viewing habits. The challenge presented by memorizing the tune and words, combined with the visual and aural reinforcement of the message will appeal to a variety of different learning styles including visual, aural, verbal and physical (the act of singing).

8. Ethical Considerations

8.1. The ethical considerations I need to take into account include copyright and the recording of individuals. The tune used for the Preposition Song is an original composition and as such not subject to third party rights. The subject matter is the English language which (by definition) is in the public domain. The recording of the song involves the use of children’s voices. The children involved are willing participants and not identifiable in any way. The finished product doesn’t involve any elements that could possibly be considered inappropriate.
