1. Text to self connections

1.1. I have been salt water fishing before and I enjoyed it like the Old Man does everyday. I think that if the Old Man did not like his profession then the story would be a lot different because the Old Man would have a negative tone throughout the story instead of a positive one.

1.2. I have sometimes been like the Old Man because I have had to stay with something for a long time to accomplish a goal. An example of this was when I played lacrosse from 2nd grade to 8th grade. I was able to make the James River JV lacrosse team that year because of all of my hard work.

1.3. I am not like the old man because I do not criticize myself and tell myself to get back on track. This makes the Old Man seem wiser and more intelligent than other characters that I have read about.

2. Text to text connections

2.1. The Old Man is like Golem from The Lord of the Rings trilogy because he talks to himself because he is so lonely. Golem talks to himself because the ring is making him hallucinating. He thinks that he is talking to someone else.

2.2. The Old Man and the Sea is different from Moby Dick because the Old Man goes out to sea by himself. Captain Ahab and his crew went out to sea and were able to split the duties of the ship between each other. If the Old Man were to go out to sea with the boy then they would be able to split the duties of catching the fish and make it easier for both of them.

2.3. The Giver is like The Old Man and the Sea because The Giver is wise in his profession just like the old man. They both have apprentices who will follow them in their professions. The boy will become a fisherman with the help of the Old Man. Jonas will become the Giver with the help and guidance of the Giver.

5. Text to world connections

5.1. There are many poor farmers and fishers in the world who have to get by on little to nothing like the Old Man pretending to the boy that he had things as simple as rice. The Old Man is very happy and satisfied with his life compared to rich billionaires who always want more and are never happy.

5.2. In the world, when people accomplish something great, there are always those who try to tear away at what you have accomplished like the sharks were doing to the Old Man's great prize. The sharks were able to take 1/2 of the Old Man's great fish.

5.3. The Old Man caught a fish which weighed about 1,500 pounds in the story. Alfred Dean caught a 2,664 pound fish off the coast of Australia on April 21, 1959. This catch is the largest fish ever caught.

6. Margaritaville

6.1. Nibblin' on sponge cake, watchin' the sun bake; All of those tourists covered with oil. Strummin' my six string on my front porch swing. Smell those shrimp They're beginnin' to boil. Wasted away again in Margaritaville, Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt. Some people claim that there's a woman to blame, But I know it's nobody's fault. Don't know the reason, Stayed here all season With nothing to show but this brand new tattoo. But it's a real beauty, A Mexican cutie, how it got here I haven't a clue. Wasted away again in Margaritaville, Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt. Some people claim that there's a woman to blame, Now I think, - hell it could be my fault. I blew out my flip flop, Stepped on a pop top, Cut my heel, had to cruise on back home. But there's booze in the blender, And soon it will render That frozen concoction that helps me hang on. Wasted away again in Margaritaville Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt. Some people claim that there's a woman to blame, But I know, it's my own dang* fault. Yes, and some people claim that there's a woman to blame And I know it's my own dang* fault.

6.3. This song relates to the book because Jimmy Buffet does not know how he got to Margaritaville but loves it because he is just relaxing. The Old Man loves his job and keeps doing it not only to make income, but because he loves it.
