Objectives for Two Types of ELL Programs

1. Content Based ESL Program

1.1. 1. Use English to communicate in social settings.

1.1.1.1. 3. Use English in socially and culturally appropriate ways.

1.2. Effective Teaching Practice: Provide opportunities for students to interact with one another in both a social and academic situation. Students should discuss issues relevant to their peers and the broader community through verbal and nonverbal communication. One activity could be to keep a journal for nonverbal communication, and for verbal communication students can discuss and debate issues relevant to the class.

2. Dual-Lanuage Education Program

2.1. 1. Help students to learn English and find success in U.S. schools.

2.1.1. 2. Help children become competent in their native language without sacrificing success in school.

2.1.1.1. 3. Promote linguistic and ethnic equity amount students by encouraging them to bridge gaps between cultures and languages.

2.2. Effective Teaching Practice: Teachers can focus on one theme for students. This way the students will first build vocabulary around the theme, then they will focus on the content and ideas.
