1. The First Battle of Bull Run
1.1. Stonewall Jackson and his troops heavily defeat the union troops.
1.2. Lincoln and the North realize the war will not end quickly.
1.3. Virginia
2. The Virginia and Monitor
2.1. This battle ends in a tie.
2.2. It was the first battle where ironclad warships fought against each other.
2.3. It helps the North blockade southern ports to stop trade.
2.4. Waters off of Virginia
3. The Battle of Shiloh
3.1. The Union troops win and they capture ports on the Mississippi.
3.2. The South retreats.
3.3. Although a Union victory, 23,000 troops died.
3.4. Tennessee
4. The Battle of Antietam
4.1. This was the bloodiest day of the war, with 23,000 people dying.
4.2. The South were hoping to win the support of Britain and France with this battle, but they lost and did not receive support.
4.3. At this battle, Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed all the enslaved people in the Confederacy.
5. The Battle of Gettysburg
5.1. Draft were issued, causing riot is NYC.
5.2. This was a turning point in the war where the Union begins to win.
5.3. Lincoln gave a two minute speech honoring the people who gave their lives at Gettysburg.
6. The Battle of Vicksburg
6.1. The Union gains complete control of the Mississippi River.
7. Sherman's March through Georgia
8. Pickett's Charge
