Character Analysis (Holden)

1. Confused:

1.1. "The funny part is, I felt like marrying her the minute I saw her. I'm crazy. I didn't even like her much...all of a sudden I felt like I was in love with her." 1. Doesn't know what he wants 2. Always contradicting himself 3. Stuck in between wanting to be an adult and acting like a kid.

2. Unstable

2.1. "I was only thirteen, and they were going to have my psychoanalyzed and all, because I broke all the windows in the garage. I don't blame them. I really don't. I slept in the garage the night he died, and I broke all the goddam windows with my fist, just for the hell of it. I even tried to break all the windows on the station wagon we had that summer, but my hand was already broken and everything by that time, and I couldn't do it. It was a very stupid thing to do, I'll admit, but I hardly didn't even know I was doing it, and you didn't know Allie." 1. Socially 2. Emotionally 3. Mentally He has a hard time controlling himself and standing up on his own.

3. Neglected/Feels like nobody cares or wants him

3.1. "People never give your message to anybody..." 1. Nobody was really ever there for him 2. He cares less about others because others care less about him "People never notice anything."

4. Jealous

4.1. "Everyone always sticks together in these goddamn cliques." 1. Secretly wants one of his own? 2. He's jealous maybe because he never really had anyone there for him. Yes he had family, yes he had some friends, but none of them were ever really there mentally. Nobody has ever really cared for him. 3. As much as he acts like he's an independent, he really needs comfort and someone he can cunt on.

5. Short Fuze

5.1. "That's something that drives me crazy." 1. Easily annoyed, angry, etc. 2. Not exactly bipolar, but definitely shows symptoms with constant mood swings and anger issues. 3. Not very friendly, doesn't want to talk to anyone (or at least acts like he doesn't) uncaring, etc.

6. Utopian

6.1. "I don't even know what I was running for--I guess I just felt like it." 1. Doesn't like dealing with problems 2. Runs away from reality and puts everything to the side, usually what someone who is upset does. Lives in his dream world with no problems 3. Avoids interaction with others to avoid future pain loss. He's a Utopian, especially when he's drunk, because he thinks everything is alright. Yes, he does hate things and not everything is perfect to him, but with the many many problems that he has, everything seems to be just fine.

8.1. "Don't ever tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody." 1. Hopeless romantic 2. He lives with a lot of pain and bottles it all up 3. He lost the most important thing in his life at the time (his brother) and still has yet to fully recover from the tough loss. He lost something that meant everything to him and now it's hard for him to trust.

10.1. "Goddam money. It always ends up making you blue as hell." 1. Views very little of something as a lot. 2. Very appreciative if you really pay attention. 3. Came from nothing, with nobody, and is making the best out of it. He
