1. Thesis: The novel, The Catcher in the Rye, written by J.D Salinger conveys Holden's character as a emotionally confused kid due to all the tragic significant events in his life causing him to isolate himself from his friends and family.

2. Lying

2.1. "Rudolf Schmidt," I told her. I didn't feel like giving her my whole life history. Rudolf Schmidt was the name of the janitor of our dorm."

2.1.1. Holden is notorious for lying about his life to people. He, for some reason, doesn't want people to know the real him.

2.2. "Well. He's a very sensitive boy. He's really never been a terribly good mixer with other boys. Perhaps he takes things a little more seriously than he should at his age."

2.2.1. Holden doesn't like her son, but proceeds to say nice things to her about him. Holden hates phony's, but your either an honest jerk or a lying nice boy.

3. Allie's death

3.1. "I slept in the garage the night he died, and I broke all the goddam windows with my fist, just for the hell of it. I even tried to break all the windows on the station wagon we had that summer, but my hand was already broken and everything by that time, and I couldn't do it."

3.1.1. Holden's little brother died when he was thirteen. Instead of being with his family he slept by himself in the garage and took all his anger out on the windows. Breaking his hand over not knowing how to talk about his feelings.

3.2. "I was talking to Allie....."

3.2.1. Holden is still not at peace with his brothers death and still talks to him as if he was standing next to him.

4. I believe this picture represents Holden because it shows whether or not you choose to be isolated you can still stand beautiful and strong.

5. This video is a great representation of how Holden should go about fixing his obsessive lying.

6. This article does a great job at explaining how teenagers go about receiving attention in none obvious ways. Holden searches for attention throughout the majority of the book.

7. Isolation

7.1. "...I'm going alone..."

7.1.1. Holden feels as if he doesn't belong any where so he attempts to leave home.

7.2. "So I ended up not calling anybody. I came out of the booth, after about twenty minutes or so."

7.2.1. Holden can't figure out who he wants to call because he has pushed away so many people in his life he doesn't think they care to talk to him .

7.3. "Well – take me to the Edmont then," I said. "Would you care to stop on the way and join me for a cocktail? On me, I'm loaded."

7.3.1. Holden is so desperate to make friends that he invites the cab driver out for a drink.

8. Neglect

8.1. " I don't even like to talk about it"

8.1.1. Holden doesn't like to talk about his problems because he's never had some one there to listen to him when he needed to talk about his feelings.. His parents were always to busy taking care of his sick brother.

8.2. "The one side of my head – the right side – is full of millions of gray hairs. I've had them ever since I was a kid."

8.2.1. When Holden was younger he was forced to fend for himself because of his brother Allie and it caused him to go through a lot of stress.

9. Innocence

9.1. "The best thing, though, in that museum was that everything always stayed right where it was."

9.1.1. Holden has a hard time letting go of his child hood because he was forced to grow up so quickly.

9.2. "I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff – I mean if they're running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them."

9.2.1. Holden wants to save kids from losing their innocence. He doesn't want them to go through what he is going through. So he wants to save them before its to late.
