Problems with current lecture rooms
by Angela Honegger
1. Technology
1.1. No / hardly reachable / too few plugs
1.2. Unstable Wifi
1.3. Students are not paying attention, everybody works on his/her computer: No connection with the teacher / classmates
1.4. Few inclusion of new technologies in the lectures
2. Equipment
2.1. Rigid furniture arrangement, cumbersome for discussions / presentations etc.
2.2. People are not facing the professor unless they turn to some degree from their sitting position, i.e. turning their back to their neighbor
2.3. Not enough whiteboards / beamer in every room
2.4. No material for presentation / visualization (cards, post-its etc.
2.5. No room for storage for jackets and bags
3. Layout
3.1. Groundplan
3.1.1. Room size is often too small / too big / too long
3.1.2. Homogenous room: no areas explicitly for presentation / talking / discussing
3.1.3. Distraction by other people (visual / audio) during groupwork as no possibility to divide the room
3.1.4. Layout promotes mostly teacher-centred teaching, no interaction within classes
3.2. Visuals
3.2.1. Visuals could be improved (blinds that are easier to handle, not such a distance to the beamer etc.)
3.2.2. The light is too dark, especially above whiteboards
3.3. Audio
3.3.1. Teacher / other students are hard to understand
3.3.2. Loud noises from outside
4. Feeling / Comfort
4.1. The generall climate of the rooms is not really encouraging / motivating / welcoming
4.2. People are getting tired / falling asleep
4.2.1. Bad ventilation
4.2.2. No movement at all during classes
