LINC - Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada

1. LINC is Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) offers free English classes for landed immigrants. It is funded by the Government of Canada through Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

2. LINC has been specifically designed for and is provided free to landed immigrants and convention refugees. Classes serve a mix of people coming from a wide variety of backgrounds and occupations ranging from professions such as engineers and doctors to office workers and homemakers.

LINC programs help students at all levels by helping them to be able to actively participate in everyday Canadian life, such as talking on the phone, buying groceries, talking to a doctor or teacher, or applying for work. Students will learn vocabulary needed for success in the workplace, college or university, or social conversations. They will develop reading, writing, listening and speaking skills with fun and challenging lessons in a safe and comfortable environment. They can get personal attention from teachers, plus extra support from tutors as needed. With the program’s focus on everyday work and lifestyle activities, students have an opportunity to learn about Canadian life and culture and also more about social and business practices.

5. FUN! Field trips to points of interest such as museums, parks and conservation areas or special events in the community.

6. ACCESS! Bus tickets in limited amounts to eligible students.

7. EQUITY! Childminding available in the ”Care for Newcomer Children’s Program” The on-site Early Learning Program is a free, high-quality, full-day program for children 19 months to 5 years old who have a parent attending LINC classes. Registered Early Childhood Educators (R. E.C.E.) provide fun, educational programming that encourages growth in all areas of child development and focuses on language learning.
