Race in Latin America by Mind Map: Race in Latin America

1. Cuba

1.1. Cuba's main focus on race was due to cross-breeding. Francisco and Fernando stated that because there were so many different races getting married and having babies that a pure race was lacking. Fernando believed that in order for there to be a dominance in one race is to get ride of the ideas that hold them together.

1.2. Blacks were still heavily segregated by 1919. They were not allowed in certain parties, parks, restaurants, and rarely would hold a government job. After Independence was granted, Blacks did not jump down Cuba for their rights, but instead tried to compromise and let their ideas be heard.

1.3. This was a government fight between the new Partido Independence de Color political group and the already standing political parties. Estenoz who was the leader of P.I.C demanded education, work, and basic rights for growing group. A protest was held in Oriente where thousands of people were killed.

2. Haitian

2.1. The main purpose of the revolution was to show the world that slavery would lead to horrible things and that these "slaves" were more than just labor workers.

2.2. Haitians fought against the toughest armies in the 1780's in the heart of the Slave Trade at Saint-Domingue. Nothing was given to start off this rebellion except for the built up years of anger and pain.

2.3. When the slaves were victorious in Saint-Domingue fear swept through the lands that were slave populated because they knew it would be impossible to run a successful trade system without having someone do the work for you without paying wages.

3. Mixing of Mexicans and Indians

3.1. The term Indian was created to represent the mixture between two races. Later on Indians were just defined to be from Europe. To me the term is meaning less because they tried to combine a bunch of different races and put it under one name instead of acknowledging each separate one.

3.2. The idea for Porfirian Racism took make it legal and illegal. It was seen in classrooms with teachers, labor forces, social and economic standards.

3.3. The Indians were very jealous of the success and wealth that Chinese were able to gain while living on their soil. They did not want Chinese or African Americans allowed on their land because they believed that they would mix races and the more important race would die.

4. Brazil

4.1. Brazil wanted immigrants who had a skill set in forming a strong society to do labor for them instead of the slaves. Even though it went back and forth with the Whitening ideology, it still leaned toward having more lighter skinned immigrants turn "white" . Some people however did not like any immigrants in their home. They agreed that immigrants could build Brazil and help it prosper, but were not wanted their after their work was done.

4.2. During the 1930's word of Hitlers way of dealing with a certain race got around. Although it was interesting for some, many feared it because Brazil didn't have just one type of race, they had so many because of interracial mixing. To kill off anyone who had a hint of immigrant in them would have taken out much a Brazil so Germany's idea was rejected.

5. Argentina

5.1. The biggest thing now was not how to categorize the surrounding races, but how to control them, get them to be more Argentinian, or dispose of them. Supply and Demand played a part in immigration because it was cheaper to hire people who didn't know any better. Having new workers did not stop the Argentina from banning the use of new social groups.

5.2. Education was used as a nationalist movement to educate immigrants on the pure Argentina way. However this did not stop the bad talk of schools and their restrictions of learning materials.
