Future Implications of PGD by Mind Map: Future Implications of PGD

1. Political

1.1. Governments may have to regulate what can be screened for using PGD

1.1.1. Drawing the line between serious and non-serious disorders will be a subject for debate

1.1.2. Regulations could prevent controversial applications such as sex selection and picking traits (making designer babies).

1.2. Different parties may have different stances on even using the technology at all

1.2.1. Because the discussion is similar to the debate on abortion: some believe that life starts at conception and discarding an embryo is destroying a human life

2. Social

2.1. Continued discussion of whether or not this practice is morally justified

2.1.1. "Is discarding embryos abortion?"

2.1.2. Does human life begin at conception?

2.2. We may see a healthier upper class as more people who can afford it use the technology for the next generations

2.2.1. If PGD becomes more affordable (i.e. the technology becomes cheaper to produce/acquire) then people in the middle class may give birth to a healthier generation

3. Scientific

3.1. This practice is not perfect, there are limitations that may be solved in the future

3.1.1. Not all chromosomal abnormalities can be screened for because only certain chromosomes are looked at during the procedure

3.2. Because of how technically difficult the procedure is, error does occur

3.2.1. An embryo may be accidentally damaged

3.2.2. Further scientific advances will lower the possibility for error

3.3. We have not yet discovered all genetic disorders. As more defects are discovered, more applications of PGD arise.

4. Economic

4.1. The procedure is highly expensive and may create a rift between socio-economic classes

4.1.1. Wealthier people will be able to give birth to healthier children free of genetic disorders

4.1.2. Less fortunate people may see this as unfair, and may ask for the procedure to be included in Canadian health insurance

4.1.3. This may be mitigated if the practice becomes more affordable in the future, but that will not happen any time soon

4.1.3.1. It is difficult to carry out technically

4.2. Jobs will be created for carrying out and refining the practice of PGD.

4.2.1. Practitioner jobs

4.2.2. Researcher jobs

4.2.3. Economic growth could result
