1. The 1920s and 1930s was a time of great change in American history, fashion, art, music, and other pop culture artifacts. It was a time period in which our lives were becoming bigger and fuller.

4. The invention of the washing machine saved housewives from the burden of laundry. Previously, one load of laundry could take 50 gallons of water. The first washing machines were invented in the mid 1800’s, but in the 1920’s, many improvements were made to keep clothes from being shredded in the wash, making it a more realistic tool.

6. During the 1930s two new political parties arose in the west. The prairie provinces were perhaps the hardest hit by the depression.

8. The Great Depression (1929-39) was the deepest and longest-lasting economic downturn in the history of the Western industrialized world. In the United States, the Great Depression began soon after the stock market crash of October 1929.

10. Canada took a big step toward autonomy. The U.S. took a whole different path then Canada. Canada gained autonomy by taking steady steps during and after the war.

12. On October 29, 1929, Black Tuesday hit Wall Street as investors traded some 16 million shares on the New York Stock Exchange in a single day. Billions of dollars were lost, wiping out thousands of investors.

14. The changing role of women was a result of the work they did during the war. The number of working women increased by 25 per cent. In 1920, all women were given the right to vote. 'Flappers' smoked in public, danced the new dances, and were sexually liberated. Women wore clothing more convenient for activity and stopped wearing long skirts and corsets.
