Mark Watney

1. Perserverance

1.1. Mark does not give up in the tough situation he is in.

1.2. Katniss Everdeen perserveres in the Hunger Games–does not give up

1.3. Hazel Grace does not give up when facing death

1.4. Melody does not give up even though she cannot talk to other people–she is determined to show people her voice

2. Family

2.1. Katniss Everdeen cares a lot about her family

2.2. Elizabeth Clarry barely has a family and we see

2.3. Mark often makes comments about how bad he feels for his family. He says he hopes that they are coping well with situation and that he can't imagine what they are going through

3. Death

3.1. Katniss deals with death by accepting it and doing her best to survive

3.2. Hazel Grace is faced with death and she deals with it by deciding that life is too short to sit inside and fear death, and that she is going to live the rest of her life to the fullest.

3.3. Mark is faced with death and he deals with it by deciding not to give up just like the other two characters

4. Frustration

4.1. Often gets frustrated about his situation and wants to give up

4.2. Katniss Everdeen gets angry about her situation–she feels as if it is unfair that she has to fight in the Hunger Games.

4.3. Hazel does not really get angry rather she sometimes get frustrated and wishes she did not have the disease she has.

5. Lonliness

5.1. Melody is often lonely because she can't talk to anyone and that makes her feel alone, and she deals with it by trying very hard to come up with a way to talk.

5.2. Mark also feels alone when he is on Mars, and he deals with it by finding a communication device that will allow him to talk to people.
