DEFENDING NORTH AMERICA by Mind Map: DEFENDING NORTH AMERICA

1. The Scrapping of the Avro Arrow

1.1. For

1.1.1. 1. The cost of producing the Arrows were too high. Diefenbaker once stated that “Canada cant afford to spend the bulk of our defence budget on doubtful strategic value”

1.1.2. 2. There was only a little demand for these flight planes as there were few foreign orders (mostly all the development budget was dependent on tax money)

1.1.3. 3. At the time, it was believed that manned interceptors were becoming obsolete

1.1.4. 4. Some said the plane was over rated and the test data was falsified. The plane was not spectacular, maybe even just ordinary.

1.2. Against

1.2.1. 1. It was the most advanced aircraft in the world at the time, six times faster than a speed of sound!

1.2.2. 2. It could have been a great opportunity to establish Canada as a technological leader of the world

1.2.3. 3. This aircraft would have been Canada’s best interceptor, allowing Canada to better defend itself from Soviet Union’s invasion.

1.2.4. 4. The Avro Arrow was entirely designed and built in Canada. This was a prideful statement of our national strength.

2. Canada's Acceptance of Nuclear Weapons in 1963

2.1. For

2.1.1. 1. Nuclear weapons could have been vita for protecting Canada against Soviet’s invasions

2.1.2. 2. Nuclear power will lead Canada to be more secure. Since Canadians are horrified with lots of wars and the feeling of hospitality, comforting them by reinforcing the weapons helps the country a lot.

2.1.3. 3. If Canada does not accept nuclear weapons, Canada wold be behind in military technology in the world. We should be able to stand equal or stronger than the enemies.

2.1.4. 4. If Canada does not accept the nuclear weapons and keeps this “anti-American policy”, then Canadian trade and invest from the United States would be injured.

2.1.5. 5. There are the Bomarc Missiles that were meant to carry nuclear warheads. Without reinforcing the nuclear weapons, they will all be useless without them, because those misiles are supposed to be located at various bases in Canada so it would act as our defense

2.2. Against

2.2.1. 1. The conservative minister of External Affairs stated that “It would be hypocritical to urge United Nations to work for disarmament while accepting nuclear weapons”

2.2.2. 2. Many Canadians feared that nuclear weapons would destroy the world.

2.2.3. 3. With the acceptance of nuclear weapons, tension would grow between Canada and us USSR.

2.2.4. 4. Nuclear war would destroy the world, ‘global suicide’. Nuclear weapons is a threat to all mankinds and the environment and Canada should take a stance against it, by not excepting it.

2.2.5. 5. Developments/ maintenances of nuclear weapons are very costly and money could be used for better things in Canada than on US foreign interests.

3. Canada's Role in the Cuban Missile Crisis

3.1. For

3.1.1. 1. If we don’t not help USA, it would have negative impact on the relationship between Canada and USA which has been built on trust and economics (with slight issues) for decades.

3.1.2. 2. As Canada is known as a peace-keeper, we should get involved in between them to stop the conflict and keep the peace within the world.

3.1.3. 3. The fact that the Soviet Union is building the nuclear missile launch site, it could influence Canada in a bad way, or lead Canada in a scary situation with the missiles. Therefore, we need to support USA.

3.1.4. 4. Canada should always fight against communist threats to ensure or nation staying ree democratic state.

3.1.5. 5. A nuclear war between Cuba and USA would have led to warning between Russia and USA. This would have greatly affected Canada as we are between the two countries.

3.2. Against

3.2.1. 1. Canada shouldn’t have been involved because this crisis is mainly between USA and Soviet Union, it would only cause another conflict.

3.2.2. 2. Cuba was only trying to arm to defend themselves from overly dominating American government and other foreign powers

3.2.3. 3. Involving in this conflict is only an act of intervention in the internal affairs of Cuba, so Canada should step aside and watch the situation and make a justifying decision.

3.2.4. 4. Canada has to keep its independence and show the world that Canada has a will of its own, Canada is not a pushover that follows USA.

3.2.5. 5. Canadian government did not let US aircrafts land on Canadian bases. The Canadian government didn’t want to get involved in this crisis
