1. Alfred T. Mahan – U.S. Admiral who advocated for a strong navy to compete with other powerful nations
2. William Seward – Secretary of State under Abraham Lincoln who negotiated the purchase of Alaska from the Russians
3. Pearl Harbor – An important American naval base in Hawaii
4. Sanford B Dole – a businessman who helped over through the queen of Hawaii and take control of the island
5. Yellow journalism – a sensational style of writing which exaggerates the news in order to enrage newspaper readers
6. U.S.S. Maine – a United States warship which exploded in the harbor of Havana, Cuba
7. Rough Riders – a unit of volunteer cavalry, led by Theodore Roosevelt, who fought in the Spanish American War
8. The Treaty of Paris – an agreement between the USA and Spain to stop the Spanish American War, the USA gained control of overseas possessions Guam, Puerto Rico and the Philippines.
9. Imperialism – the policy in which stronger nations extend their economic, political, or military control over weaker territories
10. Queen Liliuokalani – the last queen of Hawaii before the USA took control of the island
