1. Benchmark

1.1. Short tests given throughout the school year

1.2. Usually timed and multiple-choice,

1.3. Used to measure student growth as well as guide future instruction

1.4. Focus on reading and math

2. Diagnostic

2.1. Used to determine a student's present level of academic skill in order to create a plan for their academic success

2.2. The first step in determining a student's educational plan

2.3. Assesses what the learner already knows and what challenges they may face with new content

3. Performance

3.1. Group and individual projects

3.2. Presentations, mock trials, reader's theaters

3.3. Measure student performance in a setting other than pencil and paper

3.4. Journaling, either about a particular topic, or having a free writing journal to assess general writing skills

4. Formative

4.1. Used to provide feedback

4.2. Used to adjust instruction

4.3. Are done throughout lessons and units of study

4.4. Examples include exit tickets, questioning, quickwrites, etc. (informal) and quizzes (formal)

5. Summative

5.1. Used to assess growth after a long period of time

5.2. Can be composed of various types of questions (multiple choice, true/false. short answer, essay,)

5.3. Summative assessments are used as to measure the students' ability to learn as well as the teacher's ability to teach

5.4. Examples include standardized tests, end-of-unit assessments, research projects, and midterm and final exams
