Arctic Monkey's - Why'd you only call me when your high by Mind Map: Arctic Monkey's - Why'd you only call me when your high

1. The lyrics

1.1. The lyrics in the song suggest the same theme throughout which is to do with going out, getting drunk and also the challenges that this brings to relationships with other people. For example the main chorus of the song is 'Why'd you only call me when your high?' and this suggests real life problems such as drink or drug addictions that people may have and how these problems effect the other people that are around them.

2. Goodwin's theory

2.1. In the video, there are certain elements that comply with Andrew Goodwin's theory. For example, his theory says that videos will include genre characteristics and Arctic Monkey's are an indie rock band and the common genre characteristics are generally darker colours, more 'gritty' themes and real life issues which are clearly shown in this particular video. Also, there are some relationships between the music and the visuals, however, it challenges the theory as there are few intertextual references.

3. Audience

3.1. The audience for this song can be a wide range of people that all may have different expectations and different parts of the audience may interpret different meanings or themes from the lyrics in the song. The audience for indie rock music songs and videos will expect real life themes that they can relate to, such as love, addictions and other real life problems.

4. Themes

4.1. The main themes in the song are to do with drugs, drink, addictions, going out and relationships and all of these are real life problems and issues which helps the song relate more to its audience.

5. Tone/emotion

5.1. The main tone in the song is one that at the beginning seems to be fun as the artist is shown to be drinking in a pub, however this mood quickly changes to a darker tone which implies that the man is regretting his decisions and wants to try and make them right.

6. Narrative Ideas

6.1. The narrative idea that I am planning to use for this song would of similar themes, for example the main theme would be going, alongside relationships. The main character would be shown to be out with his friends, late at night whilst his partner would be at home, trying to get hold of him and find out where he is, however, in the end, the man would return home to find that his partner had left and he would see a note that she had left. All of the furniture would be gone and the house would be empty.
