Differentiation following pre-assessment by Mind Map: Differentiation following pre-assessment

1. Group #1: 5 students who answered most pre-assessment questions correctly

1.1. Group work

1.1.1. These 5 students will extend their knowledge of poster design by working together to analyze posters found on the blog TypographicPosters. Students will pick one poster that effectively uses the elements of design.

1.2. Formative assessment

1.2.1. Following the group work, students will complete an individual exit slip that asks them to write a quick paragraph of how the elements of design are used in poster design.

1.3. Assessment throughout the unit

1.3.1. Students will be assessed through exit slips, turn and talks, informal checks for understanding, and Do Now activities.

1.3.2. Students will have the opportunity to write down learnings and discoveries in their notebook at any point during the unit.

2. Group #3: 5 students who have limited knowledge of the topic

2.1. Group work

2.1.1. Students will watch a 5 minute movie about poster design as an art form. They will work together to write a list of vocabulary words that are related to it, and write a definition for each one.

2.2. Formative assessment

2.2.1. Following the group work, students will complete an exit slip that asks them to identify 3 new things they learned about poster design and 1 question they still have. Their homework will be to research the lingering question.

2.2.1.1. If growth is not apparent through the exit slip, students will meet with the teacher during the next class period and complete a worksheet.

2.3. Assessment throughout the unit

2.3.1. Students will be assessed through exit slips, turn and talks, informal checks for understanding, and Do Now activities.

2.3.2. Students will have the opportunity to write down learnings and discoveries in their notebook at any point during the unit

3. Group #2: 12 students who have some knowledge but need to developed H.O.T skills

3.1. Group work

3.1.1. These 12 students will read a one page summary about the elements that make up an effective poster design. They will be given a sample poster to label these elements.

3.1.2. Students will secure their knowledge about poster design by applying what they just read about posters. They will work together in groups of 3 to design a poster that effectively uses the elements they just read about.

3.2. Formative assessment

3.2.1. Following the group work, students will complete an exit slip that will ask them to write about three elements of a poster design and why they are important.

3.2.1.1. If growth is not apparent through the exit ticket, students will break into groups during the next class and complete a worksheet.

3.3. Assessment throughout the unit

3.3.1. Students will be assessed through exit slips, turn and talks, informal checks for understanding, and Do Now activities.

3.3.2. Students will have the opportunity to write down learnings and discoveries in their notebook at any point during the unit.
