Targeted Language Arts and Literacy Instruction by Mind Map: Targeted Language Arts and Literacy Instruction

1. Language Form and Structure

1.1. Students will have pictures of objects with the name underneath, like flashcards. Students will identify and describe what the object is when you use it. Students will then try and write a sentence about the object and what it is used for using proper vocabulary and sentence structure.

1.2. Students will play word BINGO. They will take words from the word wall and play BINGO. In order for a student to win, they must know how to pronounce the word and properly use it in a sentence. They get bonus points if they give a definition to each word used in the game.

2. Describing and Measuring English Proficiency

2.1. Students will watch a short video about frogs. Before the video starts, they will be asked to make a list of things they already know about frogs. After or during the video, students will add to the list in a different color. Students will then be asked to draw a picture of a frog and will have the opportunity to stand in front of the class and tell a story about when they saw a frog.

2.2. Students will be given a passage. They will read and identify the main idea of the passage. Students will then be asked to find details within the passage that help support their ideas.

3. Language Arts Protocol

3.1. The instructor will read a story verbally. The students will be asked details about the story to ensure they understand the story and the question that is being asked.

3.2. Students will be split into groups. Each member of the group will have set responsibilities. Group member number one(GM1) will be the reader, group member number two(GM2) will be the writer and group member number 3(GM3) will be the drawer. GM1 will read a short story out of a book and GM2 will write down the main idea, and GM3 will draw what they think the cover of the story should be. The members will switch positions until every member has done every position. One member will pick a story they read and share it with the class.

4. Language Acquisition

4.1. Have students listen to spoken dialogue and have them answer multiple choice questions about what they just heard

4.2. Students will be given a copy of a conversation. They will read it over and translate it to English. Then re-read idea with a partner but this time in English. Students should try to continue the conversation after it has been translated.

5. Language Arts Instruction for English Learners

5.1. Students will be given pictures that have the name or the word of the object in their native language. Student will also receive the same pictures but with the English translation. They will match the pictures together and repeat verbally what the object is in their native language and what it is in English. Students will then write down the word in English and draw a picture in their notebooks.

5.2. Students will  be asked to make a graphic organizer. There will be words or phrases that each student will need to complete. Students will be asked for a definition, picture, sentence and the translated word from their native language.
