1. Take your verb, and find the verb stem!

1.1. EX: 먹다 (to eat) 먹 is what we're working with now!

2. If you end up with ㅗ,ㅏwith NO ending consonants, then add ㅏ, if it isn't there already. Add 요 to make it formal.

2.1. EX: 싸 다 (to be cheap) 싸 (verb stem) Since ㅏis already there, nothing changes.

2.2. 오다 (to come) 오 (verb stem)  Add ㅏ and the basic form is 와.

3. If it DOES HAVE an ending consonant, add 아. Add 요 to make it formal.

4. The “BASIC” form is sometimes called the “fully conjugated stem”, “vowel contraction”, or very commonly the “아 / 어 / 여 form”.

4.1. But, these names don’t give the form the recognition it deserves. For this reason, we choose to call it the BASIC form.

5. The BASIC form can be casual, polite, present tense, future tense, or even a command.

6. In fact, the BASIC form is a fundamental part of many Korean grammar patterns. It’s

7. one of the most important verb forms you will learn

8. If it ends with, ㅓ, ㅐ, ㅔ, ㅜ and has NO ending consonants, then add ㅓ. (if you add it onto another vowel, use the compound vowel it looks like!) Add 요 to make it formal.

8.1. EX: 주다 (to give) 주 (verb stem) 줘 is the basic form

9. If it DOES have an ending consonant, then add 어 Add 요 to make it formal.

10. Circle the LAST vowel!

10.1. Vowels are all T shapes! ㅛ ㅕ ㅑ ㅐㅔ ㅗ ㅓ ㅏ ㅣ ㅠ ㅜ ㅡ

11. Underline the LAST consonant!

13. 하 gets changed to 해

14. If it ends with ㅣ and does NOT have an ending consonant change the LAST vowel to ㅕAdd 요 to make it formal

14.1. EX: 마시다 (to drink)  마시 (verb stem)  마셔 Basic form

15. If it DOES HAVE an ending consonant, add 어 Add 요 to make it formal.

16. If it ends with ㅡ and does NOT have an ending consonant change the LAST vowel to ㅓAdd 요 to make it formal.

17. EXCEPTION: If the verb is a multi character verb, and the PRIOR character has ㅏ or ㅗ, as  change the FINAL vowel of the STEM toㅏ. Add 요 to make it formal.

17.1. EX: 나쁘다(to be bad) 나쁘 (verb stem) Because 나  , has,ㅏ , the ㅡ in 쁘 becomes ㅏ  , and 나빠 is the basic form

18. If it DOES have an ending consonant, add 어 Add 요 to make it formal.
