Analysing Previous Student Music Videos by Mind Map: Analysing Previous Student Music Videos

1. Goodwin's idea of disjuncture is presented in this music video as there is little link between the lyrics and the video.

1.1. However it can be argued that they are synced because when the female protagonist sang 'looking like trash' the image cut to the male protagonist looking distressed although not explicitly looking like trash which can be considered to be a contradiction because he was in fact wearing a clean white shirt and tie despite not being intact.

2. Costume

2.1. >The number of costume changes was five in total. Two for the female and three for the male.

3. Mise en scene--->

3.1. >The mask and the guitar play an important role as it appears numerous of times, highlighting its crucial significance. the mask was presented as something that was restricting the male artist because when the female removed the mask it was as if he had been set free. an accurate and clear video as presented revolving around the central theme about the degradation of man as they was presented as flawed  characters wh needed saving and need to be drawn out of their pit of darkness.

4. Intended audience

4.1. >From watching and reviewing this music video, I believe the targeted audience would possibly be around the ages of 20-28. This is because the video provides lots of implicit meanings which may not be correctly interrupted and understood by a younger audience.

5. In this video the artists are both performing and narrating, this results in the ratio of proportionality between the two equalling to around 5:6

6. Lighting

6.1. > In my opinion I believe this video is perfectly lit as the lighting is the same quality throughout the whole video. despite not obviously having control, the weather played a pivotal role because it worked well with the dyrilict atmosphere they attempted to create.

7. Editing--->

7.1. >Editing techniques used in this video includes a lot of jump cuts at an increased speed.           >The shots which were filmed with the camera moving as they walked worked very well, particularly for their video idea because it added a realism element, went very well with the dysfunctioned atmosphere and was synchronized with the musical beat.

8. Representation

8.1. > It can be argued that there is an under representation of the typical white (often middle classed) male or female due to the fact the group had chosen both artists to be from different diverse backgrounds.                         > I believe this is part of their unique selling point as their artist combination is not usual and it added an intriguing visual element to the piece.

9. Genre

9.1. >This song is a mash up of two songs from different genres. one of the songs were by TLC called 'No Scrubs' (R&B genre) and the other was by The XX called 'Angles (Indie Pop                                                             >The mash up is called 'No Angles' and was created by Bastille and featured Ella Eyre

10. Location

10.1. The 3 main locations where the estate, woods and the industrial site. it was really simple but used in an effective way due to how they transitioned them in to each other. all the locations linked in some way and was not seen as random and out of place.
