Classroom Management by Mind Map: Classroom Management

1. Be Consistent Consistent execution of the rules helps to maintain respect in the classroom.

2. Use Hand Signals and Non-Verbal Communication Flick lights on and off, clapping hands and asking students to repeat the clap back to you, or do an action and ask "if you can hear me, do this" repeatedly until the whole class is involved.

3. Set Your Expectations From The Beginning Take the time to teach expectations, and reteach them as needed. This will remind students how to behave appropriately in the classroom.

4. Team Effort Challenging the students with incentives for rewards when they work together keeps things fun in the classroom. Students who are able to work towards a goal are less likely to misbehave.

5. Connect & Reconnect Greet students at the door every day, inquire about how their days are going. Build the relationship with each individual student. Spend time participating in their extracurricular activities, sporting events, concerts, etc. to support them.

6. Choose Your Battles Don't waste energy on small misbehaviours, and focus more on the bigger, more important issues.

7. Put Yourself in Their Shoes Try to look at things from the student's perspective and be empathetic. This may make disciplinary actions easier for you.

8. Keep Them Busy Getting students engaged and involved in the lesson prevents disruptions and misbehaving.

9. No Hard Feelings Don't take it personally when a student lashes out. Every day is an opportunity to start fresh, because every one has a bad day once and awhile.

10. Mutual Respect Explain to the students that they should treat you with the same respect and dignity that they would want to be treated with. This will also help students to resolve problems with other students and diffuse a situation.

11. Be Patient It is important to manage your reactions appropriately when things get out of your control. Having patience will help keep you calm and make it easier to get the classroom back under control.
