Civil Rights Movement: The Arrest of Rosa Parks

Rosa Parks

Rosa parks was arrested on Decmber 1st, 1955 after she refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus.  

NAACP

Natioal Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Formed in 1909, supported court cases intended to overturn segregation.

E.D. Nixon

Edgar Daniel Nixon, former president of local chapter of NAACP convinced Rosa Parks to take her case to the courts in the effort to challenge bus segregation.

Montgomery Bus Boycott

For 11 months African-Americans organized intricate car-pooling systems and travelded by physically walking

Montgomery Improvement Association

Group formed to run boycott and negotiate with city leaders for an end to segregation.  

Freedom Riders

In 1961 CORE (Congress of Racial equality; chicago 1942) leader James Farmer asked teams of African-Americans and whites to travel into the South to draw attention to the South's refusal to integrate bus terminals.

Martin Luther King Jr.

26 year old reverend who elected to lead the organization. Exhibited powerful skill of leadership and rhetoric. Become the prominent leader of the African-American Civil Rights movement. Assasinated on April 4th, 1968 when preaching from a Memphis Balcony.    

Ku Klux Klan

White Supremacy organization formed after the Civil War. Attacked and assaulted many of the "Freedom Riders".

Segregation

Segregation was the legal practice of seperate public facilities for Whites and African-Americans.
