1.1. any function which can be defined by a rational fraction, where the numerator and the denominator are polynomials
2. real-world examples:
2.1. They can be used as distance-speed problems, or modeling time too.
3. radical functions
3.1. contains a radical expression with the independent variable, usually x, in the radicand
4. real world examples:
4.1. They can be seen in rate, time, distance, or speed
