Chapter 21 Lesson 1 Population
by Luiza Marques
1. The Biosphere and Ecological System
1.1. Biosphere : the parts of Earth and the surrounding atmosphere where there is life
2. What is a population ?
2.1. Community : is all the populations of different species that live together in the same area at the same time
3. Competition
3.1. Competition : is the demand for resources, such as food, water, and shelter, in a short supply in a community
4. Population Sizes
4.1. Changes in a environment can result in a population sizes changes
4.1.1. Limiting Factors :
4.1.1.1. Limiting Factor : is anything that restricts the size of a population. Ex - temperature
4.1.2. Measuring Population Size
4.1.2.1. Population density : is the size of a population compared to the amount of space available
4.1.3. Biotic Potential
4.1.3.1. Biotic Potential : is the potential growth of a population if it could grow in perfect conditions with no limiting factors
4.1.4. Carrying Capacity
4.1.4.1. Carrying Capacity : the largest number of individuals of one species that an environment
4.1.5. Overpopulation
4.1.5.1. Overpopulation : When the seize of a population becomes larger that the carrying capacity of its ecosystem. It causes problems to organisms
