3 - What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? by Mind Map: 3 - What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

1. The effect of using a large scale distributor.

1.1. A large scale distributor such as Sony or Warner Bros would not have been appropriate for our 'indie' film.

1.2. These distributors have a tendency to prefer bigger films that are sure to be box office hits and would be appropriate for a more family-oriented audience.

1.3. Some of the key films from these distributors are superhero franchises such as Batman and Spider-Man, which already have pre-established fan bases. Furthermore, these distributors tend to target chains of cinemas to strike deals, which are not the kind of cinemas that would attract our key audience.

2. Snowtown

2.1. Warp Films has previously distributed a film with very similar themes to ours that received critical acclaim upon release.

2.2. Snowtown (Dir. Kurzel, 2011) is a film about a series of murders that happened in Australia in the 1990s.

2.3. It follows a murderer through him committing a series of murders, in much a similar manner to our film. With Warp successfully distributing this, it is a good sign that our film would be successful on their platform.

3. Our distributor would be Warp Films.

3.1. Warp films is a distributor of independent films based in London and Sheffield.

3.2. They have a track record of taking on films that would not be conventionally popular at cinemas and distributing them to the correct audiences.

3.3. The advantage of using a smaller distributor is that they can find the correct niche market that we have established within our market research. We aim to reach 18-25 year olds, especially those interested in cinema and those of the goth subculture. An independent distributor has good ties with cinemas that attract these kinds of people.
