2. Sociological Perspectives Chapter 4

2.1. 1. Define the theoretical perspective concerning the relationship between school and society: functionalism, conflict theory, and internationalism. (They both play a large role in socialization, including school, church, after school activities. ) 1.**Theoretical perspective- is to look how it affects the inside structure. 2. **Functionalism- a well functioning society schools socialize students into appropriate values and sort and select students according to their abilities. 3. ** Conflict theory- not all sociologists believe society is held together by shred values alone. they believe that dominate groups to impose their will on subordinate groups through force and manipulation.

Knowledge- what the person learned while in school. 2. Employment- the employee does not gain the knowledge of how to be a good employee from education. education level plays a role on employment level. 3. teacher behavior- how the teacher behaves affects the student we are models and influence the students morels, self esteem, and sense of efficiency.4.tracking- tracking the student lets the student be placed in activities due to the students abilities. 5. Student peer group alienation- students play a role in shaping each other for the future so they reproduce society.

3.2. Describe the particular world view of one of student-centered philosophy of education (pragmatism or existentialism). Include the following information: generic notions, key researchers, goal of education, role of teacher, method of instruction, and curriculum.

3.2.1. Pragmatism- the process in which a person find a process that works to reach a desired end. Dewey a key researcher developed that children grow and required a course of study to show development. Therefore the goal of education should instill democratic cooperative values inn children to make for a more democratic future. The teacher encourages, offers suggestions, questions and helps plan and implement study. Method of instruction to work in groups and individually and to find out what they know and learn from that point. In curriculum the student would start from what they already know and work from that point.

4.1. 1. Choose and describe a reform movement that you think has had the most influence on education. the development of mass education now exceeding up through college level was in many respects a very progressive development. 2. Choose and describe one historical interpretation of U.S. Education. I feel the tenth Amendment has made a large impact, it allows tenth states to provide free education.

6.1. 1. Explain a curriculum theory which you advocate (humanist, social efficiency, developmentalist, or social meliorist). I think that the huminist theory is a theory i feel strongly about. I think that I agree with the theory, the purpose of education is to present to the student the best of what has been thought and written.

6.1.1. 2. Identify and describe the two dominant traditions of teaching. 1. mimetic- the main purpose of education is how to get the information to the students this is called the didactic method which is lecture or presentation of information. 2.Trans formative- this tradition is different , they think that the teacher should change the student in some way example; intellectually, creativity, spiritually and emotionally.

7.1. Describe how class, race, and gender each impact educational outcomes. What were the two responses to the Coleman Study from 1982? (There are other responses but you focus ONLY on the two from 1982.) The differences of schools do make a difference in comparing private schools to public. the question does a private school expect more from its students? the answer is yes they do. therefore the higher social class the higher the achievement.

8. Educational Inequality Chapter 9

8.1. Explain at least two types of cultural differences theory (page 424-427) Describe at least four school-centered (not student-centered) explanations for educational inequality.

8.1.1. #1 Ogbu- argues that African Americans do less well in school because they adapt to their oppress class and caste structure.

8.1.2. #2 Lareau- argues that working class families use a natural growth molding to child rearing this means children are encouraged to be independent and play on their own.
