Articles a/an by Mind Map: Articles a/an

1. There is a simple way to remember this. When the word begins with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u), then you should use 'an' as it sounds better and you hear more appropriate when you say it.

2. When the word begins with a consonant you must use 'a'. If you use words and phrases such as 'candy', 'car' 'drums' or 'magazine', then it would be 'a candy', 'a car' 'a drums'and 'a magazine'.

3. However, with this rule there is an exception. If you are using a word with a 'h' mute, such as 'hand' 'homework' then you have to use 'an'. Therefore, it would be "an hand big" and "an homework difficult".

4. With words beginning with vowels such as 'Airport', 'Island' and 'Ear' you have to use: "an airport", "an island" and "an ear".

5. Examples:

5.1. I am a good student

5.2. It is an old university

5.3. It is a sunny day

5.4. He is a lawyer

5.5. The gift is a new book

5.6. She is an honest woman
