ISSUES IN ASSESSMENT: Assigning Homework

1. How does general public see it?

1.2. Burdensome: on parents and students

1.4. Misconceptions:

1.4.1. All homework needs a grade

1.4.2. Students should have a certain amount of HW every night

2. Essential problem to solve

2.1. Should homework be subject to grades?

2.2. How do we get away from traditional homework?

2.2.1. (Completion grades and grading without assessment)

3. What does it mean to me?

3.1. Doesn't contribute to what is learned in class

3.2. Can be useful assessment tool

3.3. Used to teach material rather than practice material

3.4. Not all students have resources to do HW

3.5. Traditional, but not always neccessary

3.6. Can be busy work

4. How can we solve this issue?

4.1. Reduce the amount of homework

4.2. Only assign what you design

4.3. Move away from grading and onto assessing

4.4. Only assign relevant HW

4.5. Explain assignments and expectations thoroughly

4.6. Stop assigning work to teach what wasn't taught that day

5. How do we communicate our solution?

5.1. Students & Parents:

5.1.1. Involve students in what they need HELP in

5.1.2. Set homework expectations of completion and assigning at the beginning of the school year

5.2. Administration & Faculty

5.2.1. Propose no grade homework

5.2.2. Focus on individual student success, not whole class

5.2.3. Reinforce idea of "education is to be in the best interest of the child"
