Study Skills by Mind Map: Study Skills

1. Expression Skills

1.1. Test-taking, retrieval, oral/written language skills and demonstrating expression

1.2. Rationale: Teaching students to be able to remember and demonstrate their learning skills, whether it be with oral or written language for tests, projects, homework, or just in class discussion. Students should understand the process of selecting and using appropriate strategies and methods for studying, using their memory, and deciding when they feel their brain has reached capacity. Educators can help assist students in finding ways that are right for their learning style on how to remember information, when to use it, and how to take a test based on what they have learned.

3. Personal Development Skills

3.1. Personal discipline, management, goal setting, organizational, self-monitoring, reinforcement, and positive attitude skills

3.2. Rationale: Make a to-do list. Lists can help with getting items done in a timely manner, staying focused, setting personal and academic goals, as well as being able to self-monitor how your time is spent on each skill.

4. Process Skills

4.1. Technical Skills: Note taking, outlining, learning informational text, and library reference skills

4.2. Rationale: Learning to listen while taking notes. Taking notes helps students to be able to better retain the information that is presented to them. Students should be able to listen, take notes, organize notes, and interpret what they are hearing. Some educators may provide an outline for notes when students are first learning about note taking.
