Classroom Management: Positive & Negative Consequences by Mind Map: Classroom Management: Positive & Negative Consequences

1. Late Work: Positive: If a student consistently hands work in late, a daily planner could be supplied to them to help with time management. Negative: If a daily planner fails, a call home and a deduction of marks can occur.

2. Bad Attendance: Positive: A call home will be made to ensure the students parents are aware. Negative: Students will fall behind on work and miss due dates that will not be given a second chance.

3. Learning Activities: Positive: Different learning activities that get students up and moving, or discussing and bouncing ideas off of each other are beneficial to their learning and can lead to fewer discipline problems by eliminating boredom. Negative: If students take advantage of fun learning activities they will not be allowed to participate in the next one.

4. Discipline: Positive: If a student behaves positively or corrects their wrong behaviour, they will receive a praise. Negative: If a student cannot correct their behaviour they will be sent to the office/have a call home.

5. Distracting Material: If instructional material includes something interesting, keep it out of sight until it's needed. (i.e., building blocks, candy, etc.) Positive: Students will remain interested in the lesson. Negative: If in sight, students may be too distracted to listen to instructions which may lead to bad behaviour.

6. Classroom Design, Placing Students in Clusters. Positive: If students behave well in their groups, they can be the first ones to go for recess. Negative: If students are talking too much in their groups, they will have to sit out of group activities and work individually.

7. Use of Time: Positive: Allocating time properly to ensure enough instruction time & learning time enables teachers to gauge where students are at with the lesson. Negative: If students don't have time to work on their own and ask questions, they could fall behind or become distracted which could lead to bad behaviour and bad grades.

8. Peer Relationships: Students not getting along Positive: If students are getting along well, they will be allowed more group work. Negative: If students are not getting along they will have a one-on-one talk and they will have to propose a way to fix the problem.

9. Democratic Climate: Positive: students can feel comfortable to say if they feel like their discipline is too harsh, and make a sound and mature argument to negotiate it. Negative: If a student does not understand why their behaviour was wrong and continues to do it, they will lose the privilege to negotiate.

10. Assertive Forwarning: A firm message that disruptive behaviour will not be tolerated. Positive: Students who follow the rules will get a positive note home to their parents in their agenda. Negative: Disruptive behaviour will result in a negative note home to their parents/sent to the principal if severe.
