How to create a lesson plan with a mind map

Lesson planning takes time, but most of that time goes into figuring out what the lesson needs, not filling in the template your school requires. This article shows you how to build a lesson plan mind map that organizes your thinking visually before you sit down with the formal lesson plan form, so you can structure objectives, activities, resources and assessments in a way that makes sense before you commit them to paper.

What every lesson plan needs to include

Every district has its own required lesson plan form, and formats can vary by school, subject or grade level. But no matter which lesson plan template lands on your desk, the same five components show up again and again.

  • Learning objective: What students will be able to do by the end of the lesson, written as a measurable statement. A strong objective uses verbs like "explain," "identify" or "solve" so you can actually check whether students got there.

  • Lesson flow: The sequence of instructional stages, usually an opener (hook or warm-up), instruction (direct teaching or modeling), practice (guided work), application (independent work) and reflection (closure or exit ticket)

The next three components turn the plan into something you can actually teach from:

  • Activities and resources: The specific tasks students complete and the materials you gather ahead of time, such as worksheets, slides, videos, manipulatives or links

  • Assessment checks: How you check for understanding during the lesson (formative) and how you measure learning at the end (summative)

  • Timing notes: Estimated minutes for each stage so the lesson stays on track and you don't run out of time before the reflection

Here's the thing about most lesson plan forms for teachers: they ask you to fill in these components in a straight line, top to bottom. But your thinking doesn't work that way. You might picture the exit ticket before you settle on the opener, or realize the video you wanted to use is a better fit for practice than instruction. Learning how to write a lesson plan gets a lot less stressful when you can move ideas around before you commit them to a template field. That's where a visual approach helps.

How to build a lesson plan mind map from a blank map

A mind map is a visual diagram with a central topic in the middle and branches radiating outward for related ideas. Building one from a blank map lets you structure your thinking before you fill in the formal lesson plan document. Each main branch becomes a section of your written plan, so nothing gets lost between brainstorming and submission.

The visual format has one clear advantage over a linear template: you can see connections between stages, add detail where needed, and rearrange ideas without rewriting whole paragraphs. The five steps below show how to build a lesson plan mind map using a concrete example, a secondary school science lesson on photosynthesis. The same steps work for any subject or grade level, and they mirror how teachers use mind maps in the classroom for both planning and instruction.

1. Start with the topic in the center

Open a blank map and place the lesson topic in the central node. The central node is the circle in the middle of the canvas that holds your main idea, and everything else branches out from it.

For the photosynthesis example, the central node reads "Photosynthesis Lesson – Grade eight Science." If you teach the same lesson across multiple sections, you can add the date or class period here too. Keep this step short. The central node is an anchor, not a place to polish wording.

2. Add the learning objective branch

From the central node, draw your first main branch and label it "Learning Objective." On this branch, write exactly what students will be able to do by the end of the lesson.

For the photosynthesis example, the objective reads: "Students will be able to explain how plants convert light energy into chemical energy and identify the inputs and outputs of photosynthesis." Having the objective as a visible branch keeps it front and center while you build the rest of the map. Every activity you add later gets checked against it. If a task doesn't serve the objective, it comes off the map.

3. Map the lesson flow branch with timings

Add a second main branch labeled "Lesson Flow" and create five sub-branches, one for each stage of the lesson: Opener, Instruction, Practice, Application, and Reflection. For each sub-branch, add a short description of the activity and a rough timing estimate as a note attached to the node.

For the photosynthesis example, the sub-branches might look like this:

  • Opener (five min): Show a time-lapse video of plant growth.

  • Instruction (15 min): Diagram the photosynthesis equation on the board.

  • Practice (10 min): Students label a diagram in pairs.

  • Application (15 min): Students write a short paragraph explaining the process.

Keeping timings in the notes rather than in the branch labels keeps the map clean and lets you adjust minutes without renaming nodes every time you change your mind.

4. Attach resources to relevant nodes

Add a third main branch labeled "Resources" and create sub-branches for each material you need. For the photosynthesis example, sub-branches include "Time-lapse video link," "Diagram handout," and "Exit ticket template."

Under "End of Lesson," describe the summative assessment that measures whether students hit the objective.

For the photosynthesis example:

  • During lesson: Pair work observation, diagram labeling accuracy

  • End of lesson: Exit ticket asking students to identify one input and one output of photosynthesis

Once your map is done, moving it into the formal lesson plan document your school requires is a branch-by-branch job. The Learning Objective branch becomes the objective field at the top of the form.
