Monk Video

The nature of the mismatch!

new functionality that we don't understand, the monk didn't explain about the binding

the caller monk actually has a fair amount of self confidence

I wouldn't have called help desk, would I?

background has not prepared us to deal with new system/feature

fear and frustration

These are the initial feelings. If these are not immediately resolved, then they feed back into the larger mental model.

feed back as more solid objects.Harder to move in the end., That's why it is critical to deal with these things as they ha[[en. Deal with the fear and frustration as they come up.

Responses in the Google Doc Q1

just give them some new gadget and note their feeling towards its ,like were they excited, dont care types, interested to more about it or what ? for eg : give preston an iphone and note his views towards it, does he see it as a just an new gadget, or figure our a way to make use of it in his profession or is excited o more about this gadget even if it might not be useful to him or what?

This is interesting., Would have to do on a case by case basis. Wouldn't just hand them something - would fit it into what their IT goals were.

Extremely useful

find out whether they have trouble with several tasks regardless of context (like learning math, art, computers, video games) or if it’s just one type of task in particular.

Ask them questions to see whether their problems are from an internal cause or an external cause.

Locus of Control

see if they blame things, or take responsibility for a hiccup

Locus of Control again

observe their reaction to a hiccup

ask them about their kinds of interests, see if they deal more with being passive and consuming information or active and creating things

Ask them to do a series of tasks and see how they behave

What are some ways in which we can discover someone’s mental model?

Thesis related

measuring this scale twice, at the beginning and six months after, can give us an idea how much this individual has grown.

Do impact predictions at both stages., Use the difference between the two measurements as one indicator of impact.

Responses Q3

Are there general strategies that we might employ to help an individual overcome a (a) fear of the technology (b) frustration with the technology ?

(a) raise their familiarity with the technology (b) ask them what they expect the technology will help them achieve and then settle any mismatches between expectations and capabilities

Just make them confident that we are there if something wrong happens, make them assured that we/I would take care if something wrong happens.

Let them first show the easy aspect of technology and keep of repeating the phrase “ did you see how easy was it “. This would develop confidence in them

Don’t make them feel alone. Relate to them and show them you’ve had the same frustrations/fears.
